STYLE INSTRUCTION VIA PLAYER’S FUNCTIONAL ROLES, ie. SETTING UP TEAM PLAY FROM THE FRONT

In the next few diagrams, we will demonstrate the didactic build-up via actual drills.

Play: 1 v 1

Play: 1 v 1

Objective:  Learning the roles of A1 and D1

Organization:

  • Groups of 2 players. One (1) ball per group…
  • 2 cones
  • Switching roles

Duration: 15 sec.

Dimensions: two 16 m. areas (boxes)

Description:

1: Black player passes ball to white player and establishes a defensive position

2: White player moves with the ball in a 1 v 1 against the black player.

Observable aspects (by the coach):

– are the attacking and defending base positions appropriate?

– is the defenders containing effort good?

– is the defender’s move to attack the ball constructive and effective?

– does the defender pressure the attacker well?

– does the attacking move have the right pace?

– does the attacker employ feinting movements?

– does the defender employ feinting movements?

Play: 2 v 1, 2 v 2

Play: 2 v 1, 2 v 2

Objective: Learning the roles of A2 and D2

Organization:

  • Groups of 4 players. One (1) ball per group…
  • 2 cones
  • Switching roles

Duration: 15 sec.

Dimensions: two 16 m. areas (boxes)

Description:

1: Black player passes ball to white player and establishes a defensive position

2: White player moves with the ball in a 2 v  2 against the black player.

Observable aspects (by the coach):

  • Does V2 maintain well the balance over the area to be defended?
  • Is the switching between roles from D1 to D2 good?
  • Is the switching between roles from A1 to A2 good
  • Do the attackers choose the timing and place of breaking into the defensive line well?
Play: 3 v 2, 3 v 3

Play: 3 v 2, (3 v 3)

Objective: Learning the roles of A3 and D3

Organization: 5 players, 1 ball

Duration: 20 sec.

Description:

1: A1’s double pass

2: receiving player moves the ball slowly, attracts defender

3: returns pass to A2 who is diagonally retreating

4: player with ball passes on the run to player „A”

  1. solution:

  1. solution:

Objective: Learning the roles of A3 and D3

Organization: 5 players, 1 ball

Duration: 20 sec.

Description:

1: A1 double pass to A2 defender moving diagonally

2: receiving player moves the ball slowly, attracts defender

3: player with ball passes on the run to „A”

  1. solution:

Objective: Learning the roles of A3 and D3

Organization: 5 players, 1 ball

Duration: 20 sec.

Description:

1: A1 „pass and get behind”. A2 defender moves diagonally

2: receiving player moves the ball slowly, attracts defender 3: player with ball prompts encircling player „A” to make a break

Play: 5 v 0

Play: 5 v 0

Objective: diagonal attacking and defending ie the coordinated teamwork among five players establishing their positions in a „star” formation

Organization: 5 players, 1 ball

Duration: 20 sec.

Description:

1: coach passes ball to center forward who is moving into an empty space

2: the center forward plays to the left covering flanking player

3: the left cover plays the mid-fielder who is stepping back into the defending diagonal line

4: attacking midfielder passes to diagonally attacking positioned right covering player

5: return pass to the left moving starting attacking left side center forward

Play: 6 v 0

Play: 6 v 0

Objective: mastering the task of attack organization „ball circulation”

Organization: 6 players, 1 ball

Description: 1: coach passes ball to center forward who is moving into an empty space

2: the center forward plays, probes the left covering flank who is diagonally establishing defensive position

3: the left covering defense plays the midfielder who is stepping back into the defensive diagonal line

4: attacking midfielder passes to diagonally attacking positioned right covering player

5: pass to right covering player who is attacking diagonally

6: return pass to the right side center forward attacking along right flank and sprint into defensive breach.. the attacking midfielder moves into diagonal with the covering defender

7-8: double pass

The players, with their teamwork combination, took the ball to the base line. To see the continuation of the attack see the following diagram. The players bring back the ball to the coach in such a way so that they place themselves in the „defensive diagonal”. Here is where the coach introduces the „ball rotation/circulating” solution for organizing the attack.

Description:

1: pass to the diagonally moving (defensive zone) right covering/defending player

2: pass to the diagonally moving (defensive zone) right covering/attacking player

3: pass to the diagonally moving (defensive zone) defending midfielder

4: pass to the diagonally moving (defensive zone) left  covering player

5: pass back to the coach

Play: 7 v 0

Play: 7 v 0

Objective: introduction of the A4 role play

Organization: 7 players, 1 ball

Duration: 20 sec.

Description:

1: pass to the right covering player, moving in the attacking diagonal

2: pass to the defending midfielder, moving in the defensive diagonal

3: pass to attacking midfielder, moving int he attacking diagonal

4: pass to the attacking left covering player, moving in the attacking diagonal

5: pass to left back, running up from deep position (A4 role play)

6: dribbling the ball, looking for ideal passing into breach position

7: pass into breach, finish the attack

Play: 8 v 0

Play: 8 v 0

The players, using a combination of coordinated moves, took the ball to the base line in a 7 v 0 (see previous page). See the next diagram for the continuation of the attack.

Objective: after circulating the ball this way, involving the flanking back running on the opposite side (the introduction of the A4 role play, just on the opposite side)

Organization: 8 players, 1 ball

Duration: 25 sec.

Description:

1: pass to the defending covering left side player, staying in the defensive diagonal area

2: pass to defending midfielder, moving in the defending diagonal

3: pass to the right covering player, running into the defensive diagonal zone

4: pass to right back, running up from deep position (A4 role play)
